FIELD HOCKEY BY-LAWS

1. GOVERNING RULES
Field Hockey shall be governed by the current official Federation Field Hockey Rules.

a. After a regulation tie,in varsity league play only, a seven (7) minute, sudden victory, seven (7) aside shall occur. The 7-7 will follow the CCS format for play.  Only after that will it end in a tie. (11/26/02)

b.  After recording 11 players per team by officials or the scorekeeper, those players may leave the field after the end of regulation play and join their respective teams. (12/02/04)

2. GAME LIMITATIONS
a) A maximum of 20 games plus 1 scrimmage and 1 non-CIF contest may be played.

b) A tournament shall be defined as involving athletes from four (4) or more teams.

c) A tournament shall be further defined as counting as the minimum number of contests the tournament guarantees to each team, or athlete. For purposes of definition, contest is defined as a competitive encounter with another school, or athlete, in which a score is kept. (5-16-96)

d) Tournaments in which official timed games are not played will be counted as number of days tournament is played. (EX. Hockey Jamboree - 2 games)

e) Tournaments in which official Federation times games are played will count as number of guaranteed games played. (EX.: Tournament guaranteed games = 2, count shall be 2)

3. TEAM CLASSIFICATIONS
a) The Official teams in hockey shall be a Varsity team and a Junior Varsity team.

b) Schools must field a Varsity team before fielding a Junior Varsity team.

c) There will be no seniors on Junior Varsity teams. (4-99)

d) Once league starts, a Varsity player cannot play in a Junior Varsity game.
A Junior Varsity player may play on the Varsity team in non-league division
tournaments
and return to the Junior Varsity Team for league/division play.

e) A Junior Varsity player who plays in a Varsity League Division Game is considered to be a  Varsity player.

4. GAME MANAGEMENT REGULATIONS
a) The Varsity game is to be played first, unless changed by mutual consent of both schools.

b) The Varsity game shall consist of two (2) thirty-minute halves with a 5 minute halftime.

c) The Junior varsity game shall consist of two (2) twenty-five minute halves with a 5 minute halftime.

d) A lineup of the team members will be submitted by each coach 15 minutes before the start of the game. The lineup is to include the players’ names and uniform number.

e) If a game is rained out, the home team shall notify the visiting team and the officials by 12:00 noon. The rained out game shall be played at the earliest convenient day. 

f)  A varsity game will be played with 2 officials unless both schools mutually agree on one official.  (11/26/02)

5. ALL LEAGUE SELECTION
All League selections shall follow the BVAL Chart of Awards as follows:

Varsity 1st team 13
Varsity 2nd team 13
JV 1st & 2nd teams 26 (4-20-99)

In addition the Varsity will receive 5 special recognition awards: MVP,SR.,JR.,SOPH. Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year. (5-25-00)

No team shall receive more than 8 All leagues including the special awards. (1/23/01)

6. DIVISION WINNER/C.C.S. REPRESENTATIVES
a) A team shall be awarded 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie. The division placement will be the order of team points. The team with the greatest number of points will be declared the champion. If there is a tie, both teams shall be declared division champions.

b) If tied in points, the CCS Representative shall be the team with the better
head-to-head record.

  b.1  If 3 or more teams are tied, determine the record against each other and apply 3 points for a win and 1 point for a tie to determine the CCS representative.   (12/1/05)

c) If still tied, the team with the greater number of wins in division play shall be the CCS Representative.

d) If still tied, the team with the greatest goal differential  between the tied schools in league head to head play  (1/23/03) shall be declared the CCS Representative.

e) If still tied, the team with the least goals allowed in division play shall be declared the CCS Representative. (4-99)

f) If still tied, a coin flip shall determine the CCS Representative.

7. YELLOW CARD/RED CARD

a) A red-carded player shall be immediately ejected from the game. The team may not substitute for a red-carded player. The player will also have a one game suspension for the following league game or CCS contest.
